Some of the trails in the Porkies
guide hikers through magnificent stands of old growth timber. Even in locations
that have previously felt the effects of man, the trailside vegetation
is quite lush.
Numerous waterfalls are located
within the boundaries of the Porkies. An extensive boardwalk trail near
the Presque Isle Campground makes access to three large waterfalls easy
for everyone .
Thick vegetation provides a
natural frame for a stunning view of this waterfall on the Presque Isle
River in the Porkies.
Wildlife abounds in the Porkies.
Often, only signs of their presence are visible. Black bears are common
in the park. Always practice "bear etiquette when visiting the Porkies.
After dropping over numerous
waterfalls, the Presque Isle River meets Lake Superior on the edges of
the Porcupine Mountains.
Although the Porkies are a
favorite hiking destination for many Midwestern hikers, "Leave No Trace"
principles have helped to preserve their natural beauty.
Wherever you are in the Porkies,
the trail always leads to another beautiful sight!
