A Short Hike to Harney Peak
in the Black Hills of South Dakota 7-99
The following images were created
on a day hike from the Sylvan Lake Campground (in Custer State Park in
South Dakota) to Harney Peak. All images were created by Kip Ladage.
This plaque, attached to the
side of the Harney Peak fire tower, explains the interesting aspects of
Harney Peak.
En route to Harney Peak, the
trail near the Needles Highway follows a steep route through the Black
Hills.
Rugged peaks tower over the
trees on the trail to Harney Peak.
As the trail climbs higher,
the terrain becomes more rugged.
Portions of the trail to Harney
Peak lead through the Black Elk Wilderness.
Finally, the trail nearly reaches
Harney Peak at the top of the Black Hills.
To the delight of the determined
hiker...Harney Peak!
