Building Permit  Information

When is a permit required?  The key word is ALTERATION.  When you are extending from the existing dimensions Of the structure.  Examples would be an addition onto the house, garage, porch, deck, or  utility building (permanent, or portable).   Of course, when you construct any new structure, a permit is required.  You do NOT need a permit for projects such as new windows, shingles, siding,  or  inside remodeling.  If you are not sure, please contact City Hall to find out if you need a permit or not.  You MUST have a signed permit before you start your  project.

How about sidewalks  and driveways ?
A building permit is required anytime you put in a new driveway or sidewalk, or make any alterations to the existing sidewalks or driveway.

What does a permit cost?  There is a $25.00 fee for all new structure permits.  Sidewalks and driveways alone are free.

How long is a building permit good?  In most cases, a permit will be valid for 6 months from the date it was issued.  If the project is not completed within that time, you must request a new permit, or have your current permit extended.

How do I get a permit?  Stop into City Hall during regular business hours to pick one up.  Drawings and other information is required to be submitted with the permit.  All permits require City Council approval, so please allow two weeks from the date submitted.

How do I know what regulations are in place before I build?
Ordinances pertaining to building codes are available on this website and at City Hall during regular business hours.  When you submit your building permit, ask any questions you may have regarding your project, and how it falls under the building codes.
