Pasqueflower Pasqueflower
(Anemone patens)
I can easily look at a calendar to determine when spring has arrived, but why?  A more reliable sign of spring is the appearance of the delicate pasqueflower.  Few other wildflowers bloom as early.  In fact, skunk cabbage may be the only other wild plant to emerge before the pasqueflower in Northeast Iowa.

Plan your wildflower walks when the sun is shining bright if you hope to enjoy an open pasqueflower.  Few flowers open fully on cloudy, dreary days.  Waste no time waiting to see pasqueflowers, their blossoms are very short-lived.

Pasqueflowers are few and far between in Northeast Iowa.  They require very specific soil qualities.  Wet springs will present with a multitude of pasqueflower blossoms; dry weather hampers their flowering.
