Black-eyed Susan Black-eyed Susan      (Rudbeckia hirta)
Perhaps no Iowa wildflower signifies "the ending of summer" better than the black-eyed susan.  Growing several feet tall, impressive stands of the flowers add a splash of color to our roadways, grasslands, and backyards.  A walk through a sizeable group of black-eyed susans reveals not only the brilliantly colored flowers, but also the numerous insects that pause to taste the nectar of each sunflower-like head.
